Preparing for Your Clinical Study Screening Visit

If you’re considering joining a clinical trial, you might feel uncertain about what to expect during your initial onsite screening visit. Understanding the process can help you feel more prepared and confident as you take this important step.
What Happens During the First Visit?
Screening visits are designed to determine if the study is a good fit for you and if you meet the eligibility criteria. Here’s what you can expect during your visit, which typically lasts 2–3 hours:
- Informed Consent Process
You’ll be asked to read and sign an informed consent document. This outlines the study's purpose, procedures, risks, and potential benefits. It’s also your opportunity to ask questions and ensure you fully understand your role in the study. - Health History and Demographics Collection
You’ll provide detailed information about your health history, including past illnesses, current medications, and lifestyle factors. Some questions might seem unrelated (e.g., about flu shots or vaccination history), but they help researchers gain a comprehensive understanding of your health. - Physical Exams and Assessments
A clinician will perform a physical exam and may order additional tests, such as bloodwork, to evaluate your overall health and eligibility for the study. - Setup for Study Tools
If the study involves tracking symptoms or activities, you’ll be introduced to tools like electronic diaries (e-diaries) or smartphone applications. These tools are used to record your experiences during the trial. If you’re not comfortable with technology, let the study team know—paper alternatives may be available.
The screening process may feel detailed or even overwhelming at times, but it reflects the study team’s commitment to thorough and ethical care. Every question and assessment is designed to prioritize your safety and ensure accurate study results. Remember, the study team is there to support you and answer any questions you may have!
